Chapter eight

Something’s Not Right

“Don’t worry, I’ve got this!” Peter said.

I heard a lid unscrew, and before I could shout wait, a popping sound exploded in the air.

Rain drenched us in a matter of moments.

“Aaah!” I jumped, my nice outfit feeling cold and wet, clinging to my skin.

“Oops! Wrong one. I know I put a light one in your jar, Melissa.”

“Touch one more, and I’ll turn you into a trashcan for a week.” Sandra barked.

I heard a clang on the floor.

“Peter,” I said.

“Um, yes.”

“Tell me that wasn’t the jar of Bouncing Elementals?”

“Ok, it wasn’t the jar of Bouncing Elementals.”

“Thank goodness,” I sighed.

“But I advise no one move, so we don’t step on anything we shouldn’t,” Peter said.

“Bro!” Joe’s angry voice sounded somewhere behind me.

“Just no one move,” Sandra spoke. “I don’t need another nature surprise hitting us in our living room. Everyone stay still, I have a spell for this.”

I heard the rustling of sleeves being pushed up and Sandra clearing her throat. She took a deep breath and began.

Plunged in darkness, this unfortunate night. We need the shadows to abate, bring back the light.

A buzzing sound hummed in the room, and the lights flickered back on.

“I’ve never been happier to see the light.” I sighed. Pretty Boy squawked in agreement beside me.

“How many Bouncing Elementals did you make?” Joe asked Peter.

“Um, I don’t know. Fifteen, twenty?”

I looked down. The Bouncing Elemental balls were sparkling and bouncing all across the wood floor. I gulped.

“Ok, no one move. I’ll start.” Joe began and bent down, grabbing the jar. He carefully picked up several bouncing ball spells and placed them in the jar. He let out a breath. “So far, so good.”

We followed suit, and each picked up a handful, ever so gently, and brought them to the jar. Once the floor was clear of bouncing nature traps, we sighed a breath of relief and sat down.

“Peter?” I said.

“Yeah.”

“Please don’t ever make me something like that again.”

Peter sighed. “Ok.” He moped.

Joe and I locked gazes and then burst out laughing.

“Well, I’m glad the two of you are finding this amusing. I think I aged ten years!” Sandra said, hand over her heart. “Let’s get back to gift opening.”

We all settled back down, and Sandra, Peter, and Joe opened my tiny gifts.

“Oh, Melissa!” Sandra said, reaching over and giving me a hug. “It’s enchanted, isn’t it?” She held out a tiny clear stone with a small flower in the center.

I nodded. “They all are. I used one of my father’s spells.” I glanced down. “I hope you don’t mind. I did test it first. They are supposed to bring happiness and good fortune. I mean, they aren’t a major spell, it’s not like someone can gain a real fortune off of them, but if you have opportunities come up that are good for you, they should nudge you in the right direction. You’ll know. Anyway, the rocks will glow when the time for change or opportunity shows up.”

“It’s perfect,” Sandra said and walked to the little table in the hallway and sat it in one of her glass dishes.
